Initially, the U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center triggered a broad maritime alert, cautioning that hazardous tsunami waves were possible along the Pacific coastlines of Panama, Costa Rica, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. The warning kept coastal communities on high alert for several hours before the threat subsided entirely. Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino immediately traveled to the hard-hit regional hospital in Penonomé, where patients had to be evacuated and treated outdoors in the immediate aftermath, to oversee the rescue and civil defense response. Mulino appealed for nationwide calm as Panama’s National Civil Protection System led the ongoing search, rescue, and building integrity assessments. Offers of dynamic international assistance poured in swiftly. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio affirmed that the United States is rapidly mobilizing aid personnel and logistics assets to assist, while Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella publicly expressed deep solidarity, emphasizing that Panama has the absolute support of its South American neighbor during the recovery phase.
